A 58-year-old grandfather is fighting for his recovery in the hospital after police said he was ambushed and stabbed by a man who broke into his delivery truck.

The attacker is still on the run.

Loved ones tell FOX 5 News, Jeff Gwinn was stabbed seven times and was also stabbed in the neck. He has trouble swallowing on his own and has difficulty speaking. He is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, and cannot yet walk.

The ordeal happened Friday morning, as loved ones said the owner of a moving company went to check on his delivery truck. Gwinn had stored his truck outside Sleep Cheep Mattress off College Avenue, where family members said he had planned to deliver some mattresses in the morning.

Decatur Police said he found a man had broken into his vehicle and found the intruder inside; the intruder then came at Gwinn and stabbed him, police said.

"It's just devastating," said daughter Jamila.  "He's always told us, don't fight-- if someone is trying to take something, your life is worth more. It's just horrible," she said.

Decatur Police described the suspect as a 5'9" stocky black male, carrying two backpacks. Tipsters are asked to contact Decatur Police or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.

The family is raising funds for Gwinn's medical expenses through a GoFundMe page.
