GBI investigating officer involved use of force

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking in an officer involved use of force in Cobb County, according to the GBI.

Officials say a Cobb County police officer encountered a male subject’s vehicle driving at an excessively high rate of speed.  The officer attempted a vehicle stop but prior to the stop, the subject’s vehicle was involved in an accident with an unrelated third party, according to the GBI.

During the initial contact, the subject became combative and fought with officers, according to the GBI.  During the confrontation, one officer utilized his Taser and the subject became unresponsive, according to officials.

The GBI says he was transported to the hospital where he died.

Several officers suffered minor injuries during the confrontation with the subject but did not require immediate medical attention.

The driver of the third party vehicle suffered minor injuries during the wreck with the subject’s vehicle and was transported to the hospital to receive medical treatment.

The autopsy will be conducted by the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office.  The Georgia State Patrol will investigate the vehicle accident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office for review.
