GBI investigates shootout between officer, teen in southwest Atlanta

Police said a stolen car led to a running shootout between an officer and a suspect in southwest Atlanta. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Cleveland Avenue near Dearwood Drive Friday around 1:30 p.m. Atlanta Police said officers in an unmarked police car spotted a stolen car and began to follow it into an apartment complex. When the car stopped near a fence, officers said they spotted two teens, a 17-year-old male and 15-year-old girl, get out of the car.

Police said the 17-year-old opened fire at the officer and ran through a hole in the fence into the woods. The officers chased the teen, exchanging fire, according to police. Police said the officer eventually struck the teen, caught up with him, and took him into custody.

The teen was struck twice, once in the hand and the other in the leg, according to police. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The 15-year-old was also taken into custody. She was not injured, according to police.

Police said the officer was not injured in the incident.

The names of those involved have not yet been released.

Charges are pending in the incident.
