Fulton County student dies after football conditioning

- Grief and sadness filled the hallways of Creekside High School in Fulton County. A 15-year-old student died after football conditioning Monday evening, a Fulton County Schools spokeswoman said.

School officials said Kamari McGowan was on the field doing drills with the team Monday afternoon. School officials said sometime around 5:30 a coach noticed McGowan did not look well and pulled him off the field. They called paramedics who rushed him to the hospital. School officials said McGowan died that evening. The cause of death has not been determined.

Rashaad Gates is a senior at Creekside. He played football and says the team starts conditioning early in the year.

“Just to get prepared for the season, just to get the kids lifting weights so they can handle the heat,” said Gates.

Students said Tuesday, many of them gathered together to comfort each other and say a prayer for their friend.

“Just to see a kid go so young, he just wanted to play football, it's just a tragedy,” said Gates.

Grief counselors were at the school Tuesday and will remain as long as necessary, school officials said.

Creekside High School is located at 7405 Herndon Road in Fairburn.
