Flowery Branch boy battling leukemia turns 12

A Flowery Branch boy, who has been battling cancer for nearly six years, celebrated his 12th birthday on Wednesday.

Robert Hart was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in December of 2010 and he’s been fighting everyday ever since. Recently, he’s been undergoing daily treatments of chemotherapy after relapsing in May.

“Even though he has spent half his life fighting cancer he doesn't stop being who he is,” mother Kasie Hart said on Facebook. “His laugh, his smile, his love for people and life is what keeps me going and what makes everyone fall in love with him. I know he will do great things in this world.”

Robert’s cancer treatments have caused a number of side effects, including Avascular Necrosis of the Knee (AVN), which is also known as osteonecrosis. It's a condition that results when blood flow to the bone is reduced or stopped.

"This has happened due to prolonged use of steroids. An uncommon side effect," Hart said on Facebook in December.

The AVN diagnosis has forced Robert to mostly be bound to a wheelchair, until his legs can fully heal.

“His birthday was good, but he has caught a cold and any virus makes him sicker than most, so he spent most of the day in bed,” Hart said. “He will be having a small party this weekend with his friends.”

FOX 5 first learned about Robert’s story through photographer Brandy Angel, who started a non-profit organization to help those in need by sharing their images and stories via social media.

Hart told us they don't have a GoFundMe account, but people can donate to CURE Childhood Cancer or the Rally Foundation in Robert's honor.

“Please honor my sweet Robert The Great,” Hart said. “On his special day and donate.”

Robert’s mother told FOX 5’s Katie Muse her son will eventually undergo an immunotherapy trial in Seattle, which will hopefully make the cancer cells go away for good.

Please keep "Robert The Great" in your thoughts and prayers!
