Firefighters install smoke alarms in homes near deadly fire

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Fire Department and the Red Cross were out Wednesday distributing smoke alarms in the neighborhood which saw the deadliest house fire in the city.

Six people were killed early Monday morning after a fire broke out at a home in the 1400 block of Andrews Street NW.

The Red Cross said they are trying to cut the number of deaths and injuries caused during house fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019. The relief organization responded to 1,643 house fires across metro Atlanta in 2015 and report that 29 people died in fires this year alone in Georgia.

The agencies will be going door-to-door to install new smoke alarms to those who need them and inspect existing ones. They also will work with homeowners to make sure they have a plan in the event of a fire.
