Firefighters battle large brush fire in northwest Georgia

FOX MOUNTAIN, Ga. - A large brush fire on Fox Mountain in northwest Georgia continued to burn late Sunday.

Forester Seth Hawkins with the Georgia Forestry Commission said the fire burned another 256 acres and is only 45 percent contained Sunday. More than 2,000 acres have already burned with about 400 of those being across state lines in Alabama.

Forestry officials said they have about 60 firefighters and tractor trailer crews on the ground and are also fighting it from the air. Firefighters will be setting a controlled burn ahead of the blaze to help eat away at the fire’s fuel.

Official said no homes are threatened and only four structures are in the area.

Hawkins said at this point they would need about an inch of rain to completely put the fire out. He said smoke could be a big issue across north Georgia until the fire is contained.

Fire officials will conduct an investigation into the cause once the fire is out.
