Officials are trying to determine the cause of a massive fire Wednesday night at the Gordon County Animal Shelter.

It happened at the facility on Harris Beamer Road. Firefighters with the Gordon County Fire and Rescue said the structure had flames shooting through the roof when they got to the scene. Firefighters were helped by several citizens in trying to rescue as many animals from the building as possible.

Officials said three dogs got loose and ran away while two cats were lost in the fire. The shelter director said the animals will be taken to the Calhoun Shelter until other arraignments are made.

Fire officials said they do not have an immediate need for helping to care for the animals, but said they may need help in the near future.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
