In a statement, a spokesperson for Georgia power said,

"We can confirm that there was a transformer fire contained within the switchyard at Plant Bowen today – there is no fire inside the plant structure itself. There are no known injuries and the fire department is onsite. The safety of our facilities and employees is our top priority and we are monitoring this situation. We will provide additional information as available."

This is not the first incident at Plant Bowen. In October 2015, a contractor working on electrical equipment at the plant was burned in an electrical flash.

In April 2013, an explosion happened on Unit 2 as it was being removed from service for planned maintenance. The blast caused significant damage, but no serious injuries were reported. An investigation determined it was human error in that workers did not follow proper safety procedures.
