Do you have your Christmas lights up yet? A Pickens County family started putting their lights up months ago, that's because it takes at least 4 months to set everything up.
JH and Johnnie Gail Allen say it all started 16 years ago when their grandchildren were babies. They started with a few extra lights, and over time their display has grown. Lights now cover more than 3 acres of their land on Dove Street in Ball Ground. “As the grandchildren got older, stuff got bigger,” says JH Allen.
JH and his wife Johnnie Gail both work and are volunteer firefighters. They say when they're not on the job, they're setting up lights in their yard. “If you're not at work you're doing Christmas stuff,” says Johnnie Gail.
It takes a lot of work, and their electricity bill adds up, but they say it's worth it when they see the faces of children light up as they look at the display. “I love Christmas. It's the birth of Christ. We can't give everyone a gift for Christmas, so this is our present to everybody,” says Johnnie Allen.
The Allen family lights can be seen on Dove Street in Ball Ground every night from dusk until 9 pm. The week before Christmas the lights will stay on until 10 pm.
