GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A Gwinnett County man is now behind bars after being charged with starting a huge condo complex fire that left several dozen people homeless the day before Thanksgiving.
Gwinnett County Fire officials have charged Darrius Matthews, 34, with one-count of first-degree arson. He told police he was burning his wife's clothes in the fireplace.
It happened at the Robinwood Condominiums on Beaver Ruin Road around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters said a woman who lived in the complex saw the flames and ran door-to-door alerting neighbors.
The fire damaged eight condos. About 30 people lost their homes.
"Many of the neighbors were home getting ready for the busy Thanksgiving holiday and could have easily been injured or killed," said Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge.
Fortunately, everyone made it out unharmed and no other injuries were reported.
Matthews is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.
