CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - More than 30 people are spending Christmas without a home after flames tore through an apartment building in Clayton County, according to officials.
The fire happened early Sunday morning at the Sterling Cove Apartments on Riverdale Road.
Battalion Chief Laura Richardson with Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services told FOX 5 eight units were damaged or destroyed and four additional units were blocked after a gas shut-off.
Johnny Woods and Adina Gunder returned to the burned-out building Sunday. They said they stayed in a hotel with their two children. They fear all of their belongings are damaged by smoke. And they're not allowed to go back inside just yet.
"I just grabbed my dog, a couple of clothes and some of my kids' items. And we ran out, Woods said. "I was shocked and stunned when the fire kept going."
The Red Cross is assisting the 10 families displaced by the fire.
Richardson said it took 25 firefighters to get the blaze under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation
