A family in Gwinnett County has their two dogs to thank for saving their lives.

Officials were called to the 1000 block of Appian Way in unincorporated Lawrenceville for a house fire. When the crews got to the scene, they discovered heavy smoke billowing from the house and the fire already spread to the attic.

The family inside were asleep when the fire started, but woke up by their two dogs barking loudly. After the dogs started making noise, the smoke alarms activated, and the two adults, four children, and dogs all got out of the home safely.

Crews fought the blaze through the night to attempt to bring it under control. In the end, the home had sustained major damage to the converted garage, second floor, and attic.

After an investigation, officials say the fire began on the front-right corner of the home near a trash can. The cause is still undetermined.

No injuries were reported.
