DECATUR, Ga. - DeKalb County Sheriff officials have a message for parents behind in their child support: pay up or risk going to jail.
Deputies are sweeping the county looking for mothers and fathers who have failed to live up to their parental obligations. It's called "Operation Deadbeat Parent," and it's an annual event.
The sheriff's office says it does the sweeps during the holiday season. The only ways those arrested can get out of jail is to pay, and all of the money raised goes directly to the custodial parents, who need the money now more than ever.
Authorities said they executed more than 250 warrants, trying to find people who owed more than a total of a quarter of a million dollars in child support. In the end, they were able to make 11 arrests.
"Operation Deadbeat Parent" is wrapping up for the 2017 holiday season.
