Deputies: Father dies trying to protect kids

- A community in Douglas County is in disbelief after a 23-year-old man was gunned down trying to protect children in the neighborhood.

According to Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Saturday afternoon Kalliber Chambers was visiting his family at Birch Landing Apartments. He was outside with his younger sister and some other kids when a spotted a driver speeding.

“He just told him to slow down [be]cause there are kids out here,” Theadore Mcgee, Chambers’ friend said.

Police said Chambers and the driver, 34-year-old Mark Munn, exchanged a few words before Munn pulled out a gun and shot Chambers multiple times.

“Why?” Quiowa Chambers, victim’s mom asked. “With so many things going on in the world you shoot and kill him over words? He was just asking you to slow down for the kids’ safety and his too.”

Chambers said she had only been gone a few minutes when she got the call from her daughter.

“My 11-year-old daughter witnessed it,” Chambers’ mother said. “She witnessed her big brother get murdered. She called and said Kalliber had been shot and that I needed to get home. I rushed home and saw him there. I kept telling him I love him I love him. He was gasping for air.”

Chambers said what makes things worse is the fact Munn and her son were friends.

“Mark was my next door neighbor,” the victim’s mother said. “They hung out all the time.”

Police said Munn left the scene but was apprehended a short time later by Cobb County Police officers.

Munn appeared in court Monday where a judge denied his bond.

Chambers leaves behind his one-year-old daughter.

“I’m going to miss him,” Chambers’ mother said. “His laugh, his smile, everything. I’m going to miss him.”
