A couple is thankful to be alive after someone opened fire on their car while they were inside.

According to South Fulton Police, it happened around 1 a.m. Dec. 1 in the parking lot of the Sierra Townhomes on Godby Road.

Colette Williams said she and her fiancé, Milton Brooks had just pulled into a parking spot near their apartment when they heard the gunshots and saw someone firing bullets out of a moving car. They quickly realized the vehicle was headed their way.

"We immediately tried to duck [...] and that's when it started hitting our car," recalled Williams.

They said it wasn't until the next day that they saw the full extent of the damage. Five or six bullets pierced the car's doors and shattered the windshields and windows. Two other cars were also damaged.

"Every day you have flashbacks of it and you're just so happy that you were able to get out of it," said Brooks.  "Most people really aren't fortunate to get out of a situation like that."

The couple believes they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time – the victims of a random shooting.  They have moved out of the complex and plan to stay with family until they can find a safe place to live. They hope the Sierra Townhomes will make security improvements to protect those who still live there.

"It could happen again and it could be even worse," Brooks said.
