Community Supports Conyers Baby Battling Cancer

CONYERS, Ga. - A local family is thankful for community support as relatives work to heal their child. Ava, who is only 6-months-old, was diagnosed with stage four Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that attacks connective tissues.

Her mother, Kelley Greer, told FOX 5 she realized her baby was sick after taking her to the doctor for a routine visit two weeks ago. Doctors found a lump in her stomach and removed it. However, the cancer had spread to other parts of her body.

Greer said doctors gave Ava a slim chance of survival, however she's motivated by her faith.

"No one can put an expiration date on my daughter," Greer said.

In fact, FOX 5 caught baby Ava smiling and playing Saturday afternoon.

The child's grandmother, Melanie Dawson, says the family has switched her to a raw vegetable diet. That way, she'll be prepared for her future radiation and other treatments as well as curb away cancer.

Dawson admits the news of Ava's diagnoses was devastating, but said faith will get her family through and, ultimately, heal her grandchild.

"Immediately I started rejecting it out of my spirit because once you start absorbing a thing it consumes you. You become it. And it becomes you," Dawson said.

Now the family is working to get more scans completed for Ava. They also want her to receive treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The community has set up a fundraiser to help with those efforts.
