Canton police are investigating a shooting that left a teen injured early Wednesday morning.

Just before 2:30 a.m., police responded to a home on Alpine Street after a mother found her 16-year-old son on their living room couch with a gunshot wound to his chest.

The young victim was transported to Northside Cherokee Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

A neighbor told FOX 5  he awoke to a single gunshot and said he heard someone running behind the house and squealing off in a vehicle.

"I heard one bullet shot.  It was one handgun that went off, my point there, by the time I got over to the window to look out, I didn't see nothing, but I knew something was wrong," Williams Johnson said.

Johnson told FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor the 16-year-old is a good kid that he has watched grow up.

Canton police said they have some persons of interests that they are urging to come forward.

The teen's mother told FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor, her son is improving and listed in stable condition.  He is recovering now at Kennestone Regional Medical Center.
