Police: Stockbridge woman tried to run over officer

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - A Stockbridge woman was charged with aggravated assault after police said she tried to run over an officer a year ago.

Surveillance cameras captured Sherron Ward running through the Walmart parking lot to her car after she was caught shoplifting at the Stockbridge store in April of 2016. Henry County police said she tried to strike an officer with her vehicle when he tried to stop her.

"The officer did give chase, but because of her erratic driving and her crossing over the center line the chase was basically called off," said Henry County Police Captain Mike Ireland.

Police issued a lookout for Ward, but the trail went cold. Investigators got a big break in the case after responding to a burglary call at a home on Lakeshore Drive in Stockbridge May 5.

"That individual who broke into that residence stole some checks and ended up using those checks, passing those checks at the Food Depot which is in Stockbridge," said Capt. Ireland.

A detective reviewing surveillance video from the supermarket realized the suspect bore a striking resemblance to the unidentified woman wanted in the Walmart case. The suspects even appeared to be wearing the same outfit. Investigators did a little more digging and identified the woman as Sherron Ward.

"Detectives went back to the location where the burglary occurred and realized she lived across the street," the captain said.

Ward was taken into custody. Police are now looking at Ward in connection with some identity fraud cases. She has charged with aggravated assault, burglary and shoplifting.
