Dozens of people gathered in Lawrenceville Monday honor people who died while protecting our freedoms.

Officials held the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial.

This year, the service highlighted the life of Braselton Police Sgt. Todd Helcher. The father of three died in 2005 while driving home from work. He also served in the Navy during Desert Storm.

Eighteen-year-old Holden Helcher said his father was always committed to giving back. He and his family appreciated the community's support and his father's induction at the site.

"My dad was a big part of my life..." Helcher said. "It was really special to remember him and remember the life that he lived and the people that he impacted."

Helcher told FOX 5 he graduated from high school last week. He plans to be just like his father and protect others. He's pursuing a career as a state trooper.
