Searchers find body of missing woman

Deputies in Troup County found the body of a missing woman who had been the subject of a weekend search on Monday.

Searchers found the body of 24-year-old Maranda Whitten after spending the weekend looking for her.

Crews had found the kayak she was in over the weekend.

She was last seen near the Shafer Heard Campground in the teal-colored kayak at around 2 p.m. Friday.

Investigators believed she was kayaking near the dam area of the campground.

Deputies said the young woman was an apparent drowning victim but as standard procedure, her body will be sent to the G.B.I. State Crime lab for an autopsy.

Deputies said they are now treating the death as a suicide.

In a news release, Troup County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Stewart Smith wrote, “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Maranda’s family. We appreciate all those who gave of their time and resources during this time.”
