GBI: Man carrying butcher knife dies after police shooting

A man accused of charging at several Sandy Springs officers with a large knife has died after being shot by police Thursday morning.  

The shooting happened on Northwood Drive near Roswell Road. According to police, officers responded to the area around 6:15 a.m. after reports of a man armed with a large knife threatening to take his own life. Police said the 32-year-old charged at the responding officers with the knife. They tried to get him to stop, but he didn't follow instructions and that's when they opened fire, striking the suspect. 

Witnesses said they heard about four or five shots.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. 

No officers were injured. 

According to police, the suspect has a history of mental health problems as well as drug and alcohol abuse. 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking over the case.
