The Atlanta City Council voted to change the name of Confederate Avenue to United Avenue. The council had been discussing the issue and taking public input into the matter for the past few weeks, but only Monday voted to move forward on a name change.

Some were arguing it was part of the city’s history and should stay, while others said it represents something many residents feel shouldn’t be part of the city any longer.

After a series of racially charged incidents across the country, including a mass shooting at a church in South Carolina by a white supremacist, an advisory committee on City of Atlanta Street Names and Monuments concluded a number of street names in the city should be changed including Confederate.

Last year, a petition to change the name of the road circulated among those who live on the street and gained about 7,000 supporters.
