A car break-in suspect is dead after police said he was shot by an off-duty officer.

Detectives said an off-duty Atlanta Police courtesy officer saw a man trying to break into a car in the parking deck of the Monroe Place apartment complex. The off-duty officer chased Deravis Rogers, 22, and radioed for help. On-duty officers arrived at the scene in the 2100 block of Monroe Drive.

One of the officers responding to the scene was a member of the Atlanta Police Tactical Unit. That officer was out of his car when he saw Rogers, who by then had entered a vehicle. The officer ended up firing at least one shot, with the bullet hitting Rogers in the head. Rogers' vehicle then wrecked. Paramedics transported the him to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Atlanta police brass wouldn't comment about what led up to the actual shooting, including if the officer felt threatened.

They referred all of those questions to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which has taken over the investigation. The officer has been placed on routine leave pending the outcome of the GBI inquiry.
