Athens police investigate downtown brawl

A Walton County man continues to recover after he said a group of young men beat him in downtown Athens early Saturday morning.

Cade Lackey, 20, said he was out with friends when a young man said something rude to one of Lackey's female friends.  Lackey confronted the man and the encounter quickly got out of hand.

"My vision is still a bit blurry and headaches in and out," said Lackey, who suffered a black eye and a concussion.  "It [kind of] hurt to watch the video, honestly.  Just like, people are cruel."

Video posted on the social media app SnapChat captured some of the end of the exchange and showed him get "hit multiple times by more than one person and while being struck in the video Lackey was seen losing consciousness for a period of time," according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report.

"It was pretty ugly, you know, to see your child down there and you can't do anything about it," said Lackey's father, Jimmy Lackey, who posted the SnapChat video on his Facebook page.  "A child is passed out [and] you continue beating him.  What kind of human being are you to do something like this?"

Lackey said he hopes the police are able to track down the men involved soon.

"I just don't want anybody else to have to go through this and hopefully this does help you know, keep somebody else from getting hurt," said Jimmy Lackey.
