Alpharetta K-9 officer seriously injured in pursuit

An Alpharetta K-9 officer is recovering after being seriously injured in a pursuit Saturday.

Alpharetta police said K-9 Mattis is out of surgery and is listed in stable condition as of Saturday evening. Police said he was treated for a lacerated liver, heavy internal bleeding and other issues after leaping after a suspect.

Investigators said Mattis was running after a suspect who bailed from a vehicle. The suspect jumped over a 30-foot wall with Mattis just behind, according to police.

Mattis didn’t stop despite his injuries. Police said two suspects are in custody because of him. Investigators said they also recovered dozens of stolen cell phones, credit cards and IDs.

The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said Mattis has a long road to recovery following his surgery and are grateful to the public for the outpour of support.
