Almost two dozen people displaced after apartment fire

Almost two dozen people cannot go back into their homes Wednesday night, after a fire destroyed five units and caused power to go out for five more at a Marietta apartment complex.

Firefighters said the call to the blaze at the Crestmont apartments came in at 9:30 a.m. and took 20 minutes to put out.

Residents said they saw flames or smelled smoke, and ran out of their apartments. A man in a wheelchair had to be helped out.

"Our apartment was completely black.[My roommate] had to crawl out," said Geno Bailey, who said as of Wednesday night, he had not been allowed back into the complex. Investigators told them the roof and structure may not be stable.

"Two days after Christmas, and you get this," Bailey said.

The Red Cross is aiding 23 people.

No word on a cause of the fire.
