Police arrest man after deadly home invasion in Marietta

- A mother was at home with her three young children when she shot and killed a man in her house early Thursday morning, according to Marietta Police. Authorities say she told them the man was breaking in, but after investigating, police said they found the man was let in by someone the mom had already let in the house.

Investigators said 28-year-old Shaquita Green called 911 shortly after 2 a.m. and told the operator a man had attempted to break into her home on Griggs Street. The woman told authorities she had a gun, so she shot the intruder.

Officials learned during the investigation that a second male suspect was involved. Javarian Mitchell was allowed into the home by Green, according to police. Mitchell allegedly gave access to the home to 27-year-old Keandre Funches. Funches threatened Green and her children with a handgun, according to police.

Green told police that she was afraid Funches would hurt or kill her or her children and when the opportunity arose, she used her own hand gun and shot and killed Funches.

Police said when they arrived at the woman's home, the suspect was found dead at the scene.

Officials said the incident is related to criminal gang activity and the investigation is ongoing.

Mitchell is in custody and has been charged with multiple felonies including aggravated assault with a firearm, false imprisonment, cruelty to children in the 3rd degree and felony murder.

Police said the children are all safe and staying with other family members.

"This is a quiet area. One way in, one way out. There's a golf course on one side, it's a beautiful area," Officer Chuck McPhilamy told FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt.
