HENRY COUNTY, Ga. - Police: Suspect in Henry County officer-involved shooting dies
Authorities said a man has died after being shot by an officer in Henry County Tuesday morning.
The shooting happened on Cherry Street near Main Street in Hampton. Police say officers responded to a domestic situation between a male and female. Upon arrival, they reportedly encountered a man with a gun.
Connie Nutt lives nearby, she watched the confrontation unfold.
“For about 10 or 15 minutes, I just heard drop the gun, don’t do it, it is not worth it. The police were trying to negotiate with him. And get him to drop the weapon,” the witness told Fox5.
When the man refused to drop his weapon, an officer fired a single shot,, striking the male, police said.
Witnesses told FOX 5 the officer begged the suspect to drop his gun before the shooting happened.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died, according to police. The Henry County police officer involved in the shooting was not harmed, officials said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the GBI’s findings, authorities said.
