2-year-old girl accidentally shot by another child

LaGrange Police say a 2-year-old girl is recovering in intensive case after another child accidentally shot her Monday afternoon by inside an apartment.

The shooting took place at the apartment at 64 North Cary Street in LaGrange shortly after 4 p.m.

LaGrange Police said the victim, Calvinyanna Sanders, was one of 4 children inside the apartment, along with the wounded girl’s mother and the apartment tenant.

"A little girl was saying, call 911, call 911, my sister just got shot, my baby sister just got shot," said Tim Ford who was standing in the apartment complex parking lot when the two year old was shot.

Concerned neighbors dialed 911 after hearing those screams and seeing the wounded girl.

"I just heard a lot of screaming and crying and I came out and saw them holding a baby, she was bleeding," said Tamara Baker who lives across the hall.

Officers determined another child located a handgun inside the apartment and accidentally fired a shot that struck the girl in her torso.

The other children inside the apartment are ages 10, 3, and 1.

"Not releasing at this time which child it was that pulled the trigger, only that is was two small children and that it was an accidental shooting," said LaGrange Police Detective Jason Duncan.

Members of the LaGrange EMS and Fire Department gave the girl emergency treatment at the scene, before medics flew her to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Officers recovered the handgun inside the apartment.  Investigators say Sanders and another child were visiting the apartment.

Officers said the supervision of the children and how they got the handgun is ongoing.

"We are trying to establish exactly how they obtained the firearm and who the firearm belongs to," said Detective Duncan.

Authorities told Fox 5 Tuesday charges are possible pending the outcome of their investigation.
