ATLANTA - A 5-year-old boy was injured in a shooting late Sunday night in southeast Atlanta.
Police were called out to Forest Cove Apartments just before midnight. Once they arrived on the scene, police discovered the child had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his shoulder. According to police, he was struck by a stray bullet.
The boy was rushed to Egleston, where he is recovering in stable condition. The victim's next-door neighbor Ashley Hicks was home when the shooting happened. “It sounded like firecrackers. I grabbed my kids and got on the floor.”
Hicks said she was devastated to learn her next door neighbor's son had been shot. “That hurt me real bad because my kids they play with him, they friends with him.”
The mother of the victim allegedly told police that she has no idea why someone would be shooting at her apartment. Authorities said they found 16 rifle shell casings outside the apartment. Police said there were holes in the apartment's front door, windows and walls.
Two men were also injured in the shooting. One man sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and the other was shot in the back. Authorities said friends took the two men to nearby hospitals.
Atlanta Police told FOX 5 no arrests have been made and officers are searching for the shooter.
The case remains under investigation.
