DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The mother of a 16-year-old boy says her son was bitten by a shark while on spring break in Daytona. Kody Stephens, from Fayette County, was with his best friend's family when his foot was bitten by a shark.
"My phone rang. When I saw the boy he went with mom's name on my caller ID, I knew something was wrong," said Kody's mom, Tammy, in an email to FOX 5. "I took a breath and answered. She said 'Tammy, this is Michelle, don't freak out, Kody has been bitten by a shark."
Tammy says that EMTs came to the scene and told Kody he was going to be ok. Kody says that he and his friend were swimming when he felt something bite his foot.
When they got out of the water, his foot was bleeding. First responders told him it was a small shark bite, but could not identify the type of shark that had attacked him.
Kody went to the ER, and was treated and released with a minor injury to his foot. Kody has since returned home from his spring break trip, and his mom says he is doing great.
"I told him he was very lucky," said Tammy. "I hope people will be aware of the sharks."
