CVS employee charged with murder after shooting shoplifter

- A CVS loss prevention employee is facing a murder charge after he shot and killed a shoplifter over the weekend.

Dallas police say Julio Ruvalcaba got in his car and chased down shoplifter Christopher Geddes before shooting and killing him. He was arrested and booked into jail but posted bond.

Donte Gordon is having a difficult time understanding how his cousin, 31-year-old Christopher Geddes, was shot and killed over a shoplifting incident.

“It was ridiculous,” Gordon said. “It was totally unnecessary. It was uncalled for.”

According to Dallas police, it all started Sunday afternoon at the CVS on the 1200 block of South Buckner Boulevard. The arrest warrant affidavit says security cameras show Geddes steal something and run out of the store.

The warrant also says Geddes then “ran out towards the Camry parked on the north side of the store."

The report says Geddes was followed by a loss prevention officer, later identified by CVS employees as 36-year-old Julio Ruvalcaba, who “gets into a Chevy Camaro and drives off."

A few minutes later, witnesses called 911 to report seeing a Camry and Camaro chasing each other on 175. The Camry reportedly collided with a street sign at the Elam Road exit, lost control and came to a stop at the intersection.

According to the arrest affidavit, Geddes "who was sitting in the passenger side of the Camry, exited the vehicle and walked towards the Camaro."

Geddes getaway driver told police "the alleged suspect (Ruvalcaba) pulled out a gun and shot complainant (Geddes) on the upper torso" and took off. He died a short time later.

“By no means is stealing right. Shoplifting is wrong. We all know that. We're grown, “Gordon said. “The punishment that was applied to my cousin — it was too harsh.”

Geddes leaves behind a girlfriend and a 6-year-old daughter.

FOX 4 tried contacting Ruvalcaba to get his side of the story but have not been able to get in touch with him.
