Wounded solider getting a new Fayetteville home

- Eric and Kenna Hunter are just a few months away from calling a beautiful new house in Fayette County their home, forever. Eric is a retired army sergeant who was wounded in Afghanistan. The Gary Sinise Foundation is donating the home to the Hunter family. They could not be more grateful. They could not be more in need of what this home offers Eric especially.

“At the house we are in now, it’s not handicapped accessible, so my family has seen me crawling to the bathroom on the floor trying to get the toilet or the bathtub,” Eric said.

An IED explosion in 2012 took Eric’s right leg and badly damaged his left leg.  He suffers from a traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

“He has had 61 surgeries and he got more coming up in the future and house is ready for whatever obstacles he might face in the future,” said Kenna.

Moving to south metro Atlanta has its benefits for Eric. They are originally from Alabama. Eric has been working as a movie extra and recently has been a zombie in the AMC show The Walking Dead and also on Fox’s The Gifted.

Fayette County realtor Kay Fulp has been working with the family. She says it hard not to be emotional when you think of the long, long road this family has traveled since his war injuries.

“He tells me sometimes, I am not the hero. The people who saved me are the heroes,” Kay said. “I tell him he is a hero for what he a sacrificed for us.”

Kay said this home is different than the many other homes The Gary Sinise Foundation has donated to wounded veterans. It was Kay’s idea to get the community in Fayette County involved to donate building materials and funds, saving the foundation precious money that helps other veterans.

The home is being built by Hamlin Homes. Kay says many local companies and individuals have been extremely generous.

There is still work to be done in raising funds and materials for Hunter Family. A website has been set up to help with the efforts, to donate click here.
