Atlantans raise $115,000 with walk to fight opioid addiction

The Atlanta community came together to raise awareness about the current opioid crisis.

Yesterday, the nonprofit organization Shatterproof hosted the inaugural Rise Up Against Addiction Atlanta 5K Run and Walk.

Organizers say the event is dedicated to helping put an end to addiction.

"I'm just here to support them and other families who have lost children because of this huge opioid epidemic," walker Jim Zumpano said. "Many of my son's friends and him as well – I mean this really started with pain addiction, pain management."

NBA All-Star Grant Hill was just one of the famous faces walking.

Organizers said the event raised over $115,000 so far.

Officials have called the crisis the worst in our nation's history, and President Donald Trump declared the epidemic a public health crisis in late October.
