As kids head back to school, parents deal with "super lice"

As kids head back to school in the Tampa Bay area, it also means it's peak season for head lice.

This year, the majority of states are dealing with what some health experts have called "super lice."

In 42 out of 48 states, including Florida, 100 percent of lice that was tested had evolved to be resistant to the drugs used in most over-the-counter lice treatments.

The new report published in the Journal of Entomology analyzed data from 138 sites and 14,281 lice across the nation. At most of the sites, 100% of the bugs were resistant.

As for home remedies, there is no evidence they work either. Olive oil, mayonnaise and Vaseline may not be a good idea.

Experts say the best bet is to call your doctor. There are newer prescription treatments available that are highly effective against lice compared to the over-the-counter treatment.
