Students in state's largest school distict head back to class

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It's the largest school district in the state and the 13th largest in the nation, and Monday, more than 180,000 students are expected to return to Gwinnett County School, an increase of nearly 2,000 students over last year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools is made up of 139 schools, including Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville. Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken spent the morning there, talking about school nutrition for the year ahead.  

There are a few changes due to the change in administration, according to Assistant Director of School Nutrition Karen Hallford:  "We've gotten a few new flexibilities around the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act....Not all of our grains have to necessarily be whole grain rich, so we changed out a few items that we were really struggling with, like our biscuits.  We're in the South, and the biscuit is really important.  And our whole grain biscuit just wasn't cutting it for some of our students.  So we changed over to a more Southern-style traditional biscuit that we think our students are really going to love."

Students in the following counties also return to school on Monday: Clayton, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Hall and Rabun. Calhoun City Schools resumes classes on Monday, too.
