GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Just because you're not in Hawaii or California doesn't mean you can't hit the water and ride the waves this weekend! The best wakesurfers from around the country will take over Lake Lanier starting Friday for Southern Surfest 2017.
Southern Surfest will take place April 28-30 at Laurel Park on Lake Lanier. The event is a weekend-long celebration of wakesurfing, a growing sport in which men and women ride surf boards behind boats which are specially rigged to create a powerful wake. This is done, by the way, without holding onto a rope, which sets the sport apart from wakeboarding and water skiing.
The Southern Surfest event schedule includes opportunities for new riders to try out the sport, clinics with professional wakesurfers, and demonstrations of various boats and boards used in the sport.
Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken isn't exactly a pro wakesurfer, but he's always happy to hop on a board and try his luck! He spent the morning out on Lake Lanier, getting a preview of this year's Southern Surfest.
