ATLANTA - It's hard to believe, but Max is already 5-months-old, and his progress toward becoming a service dog continues to amaze us every week.
The Golden Retriever is currently staying with Digital Producer Katie Muse, who works in the news department.
Max and Katie have gone on a number of public outings, including trips to the PGA Tour Superstore in Kennesaw, Grace Midtown church, Savi Provisions in Brookhaven, Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pup and Ulta Beauty in Buckhead.
In addition to learning how to be in public, we’re also making sure Max is reliable and consistent on the things he already knows. Since his first day at FOX 5, he has been learning to be in sync with the person he’s currently staying with. For example, when Katie is sitting and working at her desk, Max stays right by her side and settles below her.
Max goes everywhere his foster goes! That also includes trips to the restroom…
Max continues to learn his colors. Dogs are red-green colorblind, but they can see the colors yellow and blue.
He’s also learning to mimic behavior, and when he hears the phrase “like me,” he knows to imitate what his person is doing. That’s how we’re teaching him to do things for his veteran, such as pushing the button on an elevator. He can’t physically push the button, yet, but he knows to jump up and put his paws toward the button when we say “like me.”
Max is also learning to be fearless, but to keep stay focused.
He’s also just REALLY cute…
FOX 5 is partnering with Canine Assistants in Milton to help teach Max to be a service dog for a veteran in need.
