A dog breeder in Dawson County has started a new initiative to help local veterans suffering from PTSD.

The Beres Haus German Shepherds is training some of its pups to go to vets in honor of a young Army National Guardsman who took his own life.

"If we can donate a dog and help even just one veteran and their family from suffering this pain, then we have done our job," Beres Haus German Shepherd's owner Beverly Beres said.

Two years ago 19-year-old Aaron Galloway died by suicide. When Beres heard Aaron's story, she knew she wanted to help.

"I called Aaron's mom to ask her if we could start the program in honor of her son," Beres said.

Aaron's mom, Wendy Galloway, said she recalls the phone call.

"When she told me she wanted to do it, I was honored and I cried of course," Aaron's mom Wendy Galloway said.

So far, one dog has already completed Beres Haus' Veteran Heroes training program.

"To have Bev doing this for Aaron and veterans, it means everything to me," Galloway said.

Beres said the whole initiative wouldn't be possible without the help of her community.

"Aslan is getting free training, free vet care and Rucker Pet is going to give the veteran who gets Aslan free dog food for life," Beres said.

Now Beres said she hopes other cities will start their own programs to help out veterans in need.

"Let's do this," Beres said. "One vet at a time. Let's help these amazing people who have given so much for us."
