Is rewarding failure the wrong thing to do?

Everyone gets a trophy.

That seems to be the trend these days.

For example, a New Jersey cheerleading squad recently allowed anyone to join the team after a mother complained when her daughter was cut during tryouts.

And the New York Fire Department and the Marines are lowering standards for physical fitness and endurance tests.

But the author of "The Gift of Failure" says making exceptions hurts emotional development, and not telling kids the truth about their work can lead them to no longer trust adult judgment.
