Helping Drivers Avoid Deer Collisions

Georgia is number 20 in the United States in the number of deer and vehicle collisions. It's a big enough concern that Georgia's Department of Transportation helped fund a study about deer activity.

Not only could the encounters be deadly, but they can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

There's no real way to keep deer off Georgia's roadways, but researchers with UGA's Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources tried with experimental barriers along Interstate 20.

"They were actually able to circumvent, come around the fence," said Professor Robert Warren. The details they learned may help minimize danger for drivers.

The results of their study are now displayed on an interactive map; including results of breeding data and deer-car collisions stats in all 159 counties. It also shows when drivers are more likely to hit deer.
