Art, music & culture bloom at annual Dogwood Festival: “On your marks…get set…go!” Those are not words you typically expect to hear in conjunction with an art exhibition. But this Saturday, talented local high schoolers will be racing against the clock to create their own memorable masterpieces.
The Atlanta High School Art Exhibition Throwdown is just one of the highlights of this year’s Atlanta Dogwood Festival, happening Friday, April 12th through Sunday, April 14th at Piedmont Park. First held back in 1936, the festival celebrates the annual blooming of Atlanta’s dogwood trees by spotlighting art, music, and culture, and offers a packed schedule of events over three days. Attractions include the Artist Market, featuring more than 250 artists from across the country, and the popular International Stage, showcasing dancers, singers, drummer, and other performers from countries around the world.
The Atlanta High School Art Exhibition is another top attraction, displaying the incredible work of young artists from 12 local counties; the exhibition is also a juried art competition, with judges handing out “Best in Show” honors and prizes totaling tens of thousands of dollars. But for those who like high pressure with their high art, the Art Throwdown is the place to be, as high schoolers battle the clock to create art based on a live model (in this case, Atlanta Schools Superintendent Dr. Meria J. Carstarphen!). The competition starts Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in front of the Community Center.
This year’s Atlanta Dogwood Festival takes place from Noon to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the festival is free.
But wait…somebody said “live model,” right? Well, you know what that means. The Good Day feature team had to run over to Piedmont Park for a preview of the Dogwood Festival…and host our own “art throwdown” featuring you-know-who as model and muse!
