Designers “illuminate” stories of Historic Oakland Cemetery: With a history that stretches back before the Civil War, Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery is filled with fascinating stories of the men and women who helped shape North Georgia. And for four illuminating nights only, visitors will see those stories come alive in a unique and exciting way.
Good Day Atlanta got a special preview Wednesday morning of Illumine 2019, an interactive light installation covering a mile-long trek through the historic cemetery, leading visitors from the front gates back to the greenhouse. Along the way, Creative Director Cooper Sanchez and his design team use lanterns, light-boxes, projections, and other tools to quite literally “illuminate” important areas and help tell the stories of the people buried there, including even those who lie in rest in unmarked graves in the North Public Grounds. Along with the dozens of light displays, Illumine 2019 includes nightly live music from The Shoal Creek Stranglers and craft cocktails available for purchase.
Illumine 2019 is a “limited-time-only” event, opening at on Thursday, May 9th and continuing through Sunday, May 12th. Entrance to the cemetery begins at 7:00 p.m. each evening, and continues through 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday and 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The lights will go dark an hour after last entry each night. Tickets for the event cost $25 at the gate for adults and $20 at the gate for children, students, and seniors.
The Good Day feature team has spent plenty of time at Historic Oakland Cemetery, and never misses a chance to explore the beautiful and peaceful grounds. So, of course, we jumped at the chance to stop by and be among the first to get a look at this incredible event. Click the video player above to see for yourself!
