It’s one of the most tragic stories in history, and has captivated audiences again and again in stage, film, and television adaptations.  Now, the story of the ship once thought to be “unsinkable” is coming to life in a Metro Atlanta production that’s gained national attention for its boundary-breaking staging.

Acclaimed theatre company Serenbe Playhouse presents the Tony Award-winning “Titanic: The Musical,” running now through August 19th with shows Wednesday through Sunday nights at 8 p.m.  The musical, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, opened on Broadway in 1997 and won five Tonys, including Best Musical.  That production, of course, was staged inside a New York theatre…but Serenbe Playhouse Artistic Director Brian Clowdus is now lending his wizard-touch to the story of the doomed ship, staging it at The Inn Lake at Serenbe with a mulit-level set designed by Adam Koch with parts that actually sink into the water nightly.  Sound impossible?  Well, this is also the company that landed a helicopter nightly for the award-winning “Miss Saigon” and constructed an entire drive-in movie theatre for the audience favorite “Grease.”  Speaking of those past triumphs, “Titanic: The Musical” features a cast of 40 actors, many of whom have previously appeared in Serenbe productions.

Good Day Atlanta’s Paul Milliken has been visiting Serenbe Playhouse for several seasons, watching as Clowdus and his team constantly defy the odds and expand the definition of live theatre.  So he took some time to explore the behind-the-scenes magic of “Titanic: The Musical,” and found out how the team there is making sure this production is a night to remember.
