COBB COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Police have released the mugshot of a man accused of going on a bizarre rampage Thursday against a water delivery truck at a Smyrna office complex before being shot by officers.
The suspect has been identified as 68-year-old Gary Fink, of Cherokee County.
The shooting happened just before noon in the parking lot of the office complex on Village Parkway near Lake Park Drive. Deputy Police Chief Robert Harvey told FOX 5’s Portia Bruner the situation began when a Lipsey Water delivery truck arrived at the complex.
"Quite strange. As of we know right now, about an hour ago, we received a call for service for a person armed in the complex behind me. There was an individual who had approached a water truck that was apparently making deliveries and engaged in a conversation which turned into an argument with a couple of citizens that we know of,” Harvey said. “From that point, and individual pulled a weapon from his pocket and started emptying his revolving into a truck. Obviously, demolishing water bottles, and these bottles are made of glass. He then pulled some out and then slamming them on the ground.”
According to witnesses, a man outside of the building started yelling that he didn’t like Lipsey Water and fired several shots at the truck, break the water containers onboard.
“He said 'I don't like Lipsey Water.'" That's my understanding. 'I do not like Lipsey Water.' That's what he heard up to this point,” Harvey said.
Harvey said officers quickly arrived on the scene after receiving a 911 call and ordered Fink to put his weapon down. According to Harvey, the man lowered his gun and then raised it, and that’s when officers fired.
“Our officers saw the weapon in his hand, they started to repeatedly telling him to put the weapon down, he refused to. My understanding is he started to raise his weapon and one of our officers struck him with his sidearm. At that point we immediately called EMS, started rendering first aid, he was transported to the hospital,” Harvey said.
Medics took Fink, who was alive at the scene, to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
