NEWFANE, N.Y. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Police say a man in New York was willing to do anything to avoid paying a debt, even if it meant faking his own kidnapping.
According to police, 60-year-old Robert Brandel organized a Super Bowl pool and was supposed to pay out $50,000.
But officer said he couldn't make the payout, so he tried to skip out of paying the winners with an elaborate plot.
Troopers found Brandel tied up in his pickup truck in a parking lot Monday.
He reportedly told officers that two men robbed him of $16,000, drove him around for two days, and left him tied up in the car.
Officers became suspicious when Brandel didn't show any signs of trauma.
"Around the third day when we find him, but he's pretty clean shaved around his beard," New York State Police Trooper James O'Callaghan said. "A normal person that's abducted and has gone through something like that, would be very, their heat rate would be high, they're very worried, depressed, a lot of emotions that would be bubbling."
Police took Brandel into custody and charged him with fraud and falsely reporting an incident.
