SMYRNA, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The SWAT team, dressed in camo, and carrying high powered rifles along with dozens of police officers from Smyrna and Cobb County Police Department descended on a Smyrna neighborhood off Huntington Trace Thursday afternoon.
"They told us to get out, so we got up and left," said neighbor Eric Stephens.
The situation was tense. A woman had called 911 a little after 1 p.m. Thursday saying her estranged husband had barricaded himself in a townhome with their two young children and another man.
The neighborhood was blocked off. Hostage negotiators from Smyrna Police and Cobb County Police were called in. Officers had guns trained on the home.
"We were thinking there would be a shootout and some of my neighbors that were still here were hiding in their basement," said neighbor Nikki Simmons.
After 5 hours, police made a move and so did the man.
"We believe when he saw the apparatus that we were deploying, it changed his mindset and he came out peacefully," said Smyrna Police Sgt. Louis Defense.
Video from SKYFOX 5 showed a man walking out of the townhouse and lying on the sidewalk to surrender. The video also shows officers carrying two small children, one still in diapers, to safety.
Neighbors said police had been to the home earlier in the week.
"The first domestic situation call a couple of nights ago, they were out here for two hours," said one neighbor.
Neighbors said they don't know anything about the family. Neighbors claim the townhome is being used as an Airbnb. They said since it has been a short term rental, there have been problems, but nothing like this.
Police have not yet released the name of the father. They're also still trying to determine the relationship of the other man and if he was being held against his will.
