NEW YORK (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Ten thousand dollars can buy a lot of Christmas gifts, or even an amazing Christmas getaway.
But one New York man who literally had 10 grand fall into his lap says he knew right away he was going to give all that cash right back.
This week Richard Taverna spotted a blue bag left on a subway train platform.
Inside that bag were stacks of $100 bills.
It would have been very easy for Taverna to snatch that cash all for himself, but he says he knew he had to be an example to others and do the right thing.
"Hopefully people, it inspires them, they're in a similar situation or something else, they'll be more motivated to do the right thing," he said.
Turns out, the woman who lost the bag reported it missing to police, but had to fly to Russia the next day.
The NYPD is holding onto her cash until she flies back after the new year.
