DECATUR, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Graduation ceremonies are always emotional, but for one DeKalb couple, it'll be a moment they'll remember for the rest of their lives.
The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department held a graduation for new recruits in Decatur on Thursday.
As part of the ceremony, the new firefighters get their badge. Matthew Sanders requested that his girlfriend, Casey Cantrell, be the one that pinned it on his chest.
As the soon as the badge was on, the crowd and Cantrell were shocked to see Sanders drop to his knee and emotionally asked her to marry him.
As the crowd cheered Cantrell said yes!
Sanders said he's been planning the proposal since August and when he heard the graduation date was set for Jan. 10, he knew he had to do it then.
That's because Jan. 10 is also Cantrell's birthday.
"I was nervous about messing up, but not nervous about popping the question," he said.
Cantrell said she had no idea and was shocked.
"It was awesome and really sweet," she said.
The couple is excited to begin planning their wedding.
